Jack’s Nursery

My husband Andrew and I recently sold our pre-war Greenwich Village apartment due to our expanding family and the need for more space. We now live in Tribeca. I was worried when we moved that our new place, although larger, would not feel warm and homey but I was wrong. It is a great apartment for our family and having more space over more character is definitely worth it right now.

One of my favorite rooms to put together was my son Jack’s nursery. I have spent a lot of time and energy searching for unique and special pieces that are different and fun for both of my kid’s rooms. I wanted Jack’s room to reflect the modern aesthetic of our apartment without being too serious. It is a kid’s room and I wanted it to be vibrant and playful. Most people living in New York City apartments, like us, do not have the space for a separate playroom so the nursery is not only a room where our kids sleep but also where they spend a lot of time hanging out. I am always looking for new things to add to his space.

Jack’s walls are painted Benjamin Moore Owl Grey. The walnut and acrylic crib is by Spot on Square. I am such a fan of this company and bought the same crib in all white for my daughter’s room as well. They make solid quality furniture and this crib becomes a toddler bed making it a nice transitional piece that we will have for a while. The matching dresser and changing table as well as the bookshelf is also Spot on Square.

The carpet is by The Rug Company and is designed by Paul Smith. My husband and I found this at a sample sale they were having and snagged it for a fraction of the price. I could not be happier with how it looks and ties everything together in his room. The colors in it are amazing and it is all wool making it easy to clean if he spills something on it.

One of my favorite pieces in Jack’s room is his Up Junior chair by B&B Italia. This is identical to the adult size chair designed by Gaetano Pesce. This chair was a splurge but honestly it makes such a statement and Jack already loves to sit in it and look at his books. I love that it is bright red too. We recently added a small table with two chairs by Knoll. The chairs add another pop of red to the room.

I had a portrait of both of our dogs, Stella (the yorkie) and Fred (the cavalier) done, enlarged them and put them on the wall. I think these are amazing conversation pieces and give the room such a playful feel. They make me smile every time I look at them. The animal heads above the crib are by Fiona Walker. The adorable small animal prints framed above the dresser are by Sharon Montrose. I love her work and have one of her pieces in my daughter’s room as well.
