The Jeans Everyone is Talking About: Vetements

As the head designer of Vetements, Demna Gvasalia is one of the most talked about designers in the fashion world right now. Vetements is a design collective made up of Demna, his brother Guram and five close friends. Before Vetements, Demna designed womenswear for Maison Martin Margiela from 2009-2012 and from 2012-2014 he worked as head designer for Louis Vuitton. In 2014 Vetements was launched. The brand is about creating authentic clothing that is non-pretencious and wearable. Vetements draws inspiration from the street, the internet and a modern wardrobe. The clothing is meant to not look luxurious or expensive however the price tags suggest otherwise. Vetements wants to step away from fast fashion in that they only produce small quantities of each piece and once it is sold out they do not make it again. After Paris fashion week when Vetements debuted their Spring/Summer 2016 collection, Demna was appointed creative director at Balenciaga. He will however still maintain his position at Vetements.

The most coveted item of clothing from Vetements is their jeans. They were seen and worn by all of the “IT” girls during Fashion Week. These jeans feature raw jagged hems, high waists and are each made from several pairs of deconstructed Levis 501s. Not only are they hard to find but the price tag is pretty hefty at a whopping $1400 or more for a pair. I have to say that while I am a huge fan of the look of these jeans, the price point turned me away from buying them. I was able to find a pair and try them on…while they did look AMAZING (the construction is anything but ordinary), I could not let myself splurge on a pair of jeans at that price. Recently other designers have started coming out with similar styles that might not be as fabulous but are not far off and are offered at a much lower and normal price to pay for a pair of jeans. Maybe one day I will change my mind and think its worth it to splurge on jeans at that price point but for now I would rather put my money into other things and be envious of the women who rock the Vetements jeans so well!
